Textile Workmanship in Italy
Just as Fabriano is the home of paper , Lombardy has represented Italian excellence in the artisanal textile tradition since the thirteenth century.
Weaving is the art of making fabric by intertwining two series of perpendicular threads, referred to as the warp and weft. The first weavers date back to Neolithic times when they made very basic looms that consisted of little more than a rectangular cane frame or wooden poles in a vertical position. The construction of looms became ever more precise until the Renaissance when they were able to produce fine and intricate cloths . To maintain tradition and the production of prized cloths (just as Fabriano produces handmade paper today), they still use these wooden looms made by the artisans of the Fifties.
